If you Google "female software engineer" the top results are startling, but not surprising: "Why Women Don't Pursue Careers in Software Engineering," "7 Women Who Are Making History in Software Engineering Right Now," and even, "How to Survive in Software Engineering as a Woman" top the list.
The gender gap in the field of computer science has been widening for decades. Only 22 percent of computer science bachelor's degrees are held by women, and only 18 percent of software engineers are female, according to our data. Yet, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) projects a growth rate of 22 percent for software developers and engineers by 2030. A bright job outlook, smaller pay gaps and a flexible work-life balance are a few reasons women should consider the tech field, according to ComputerScience.org.
Some institutions are rising to the challenge and creating a sustainable pipeline of female software engineers. We wanted to learn which universities are driving gender diversity by volume. To find out, we narrowed our dataset of over 130 million people to 111,680 female software engineers in the U.S.
