Quick Guide: Most In-Demand IT Skills for 2020 and Where to Learn Them

As the information technology (IT) field continues to expand, there is a higher number of companies that require IT skills for their day-to-day operations. The field itself is broad — covering all aspects of information management systems including matters pertaining to hardware, software and even the internet. Today’s companies or organizations know that in order to keep up with the latest in the field, they need to hire individuals with relevant IT skills.

But the way we learn is changing. We want more flexibility and better outcomes. When traditional programs don't meet market demand by offering relevant coursework, supplement your education with skill-building (and often self-paced) bootcamps. In the past, you may have needed a bachelor’s degree in tech to be able to work in an IT department, but if it's too late in the game to change your major or if you're looking to build your portfolio, bootcamps have become a convenient way to land an IT career because they provide a more up-to-date education at lower costs.

Is IT right for you? Take this personality test.

If you’re interested in breaking into tech, all you have to do is acquire the relevant skills in a specialization you like the most. In this guide, we’ll show you some of the most in-demand skills in the IT industry and where you can learn them.

Python

Python has become one of the most popular programming languages for several reasons — it's versatile, intuitive, simple and logical. Most people might not know this, but there are a lot of commonly-browsed websites and platforms programmed using Python. For instance, Yahoo and Reddit use this language in most components. On top of that, Python is also widely used in analytics and open-source projects such as Red Hat and Linux Foundation.

Today, there are a lot of Python bootcamps available, offering in-depth education to prepare you for a role in the IT department. One of the most popular schools is Thinkful. Some of its graduates are now employed by the biggest companies like Amazon, Boeing and IBM. The school also offers flexible payment methods such as deferred tuition and loan financing.

Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence (AI)

AI is a branch of computer science that sees devices simulating human behavior. This process is done by using machine learning, which is the process of programming a machine to perform certain tasks.

Machine learning might be shaping our world without us even noticing. While AI is present in automation, there are other ways the technology is powering our devices and tools.

According to a survey run by Pegasystems, only 33 percent of people are aware they were using AI in their daily tasks when the actual percentage of people using AI and machine learning tools is around 77 percent.

Machine learning is a huge thing, not only in tech companies. Therefore, getting yourself familiarized with AI knowledge could open up many paths towards your dream career in IT.

You can learn this subject at one of the most popular schools for AI courses: Flatiron School. Its data science course teaches you everything you need to know about machine learning — from all the basics to Python and software engineering skills. And if you’re interested in knowing how much a data scientist earns, we’ll tell you this is a career that commands high salary. Depending on experience and the company, data scientists can make up to $123,000 a year and more.

Containers

To put it simply, containers are software units that package code information so applications can run smoother and quicker. With the rise of cloud-based platforms, this skill is becoming more in-demand in the IT industry.

According to a report by Dice, one of the top skills that companies look for when recruiting is the proficiency of Kubernetes. It is essentially a system to manage containerized applications. If you are interested in pursuing this career path, there are several bootcamps that offer comprehensive courses that will teach you how to deploy, scale, update and debug containerized applications on a Kubernetes cluster.

Java

Although there are other programming languages that outrate Java, it's still crucial for any company to employ someone who understands and knows how to tackle Java. This programming language is very similar to C or C++, except easier and simpler.

The reason why people continue to use Java (and most likely will continue to do so over the next decades) is that it's a very versatile programming language that works with different technologies such as Android or Spring. A Java programmer’s salary ranges from $52,000 to $102,000 annually.

There are many Java Bootcamps you can choose from if you’re trying to learn this skill. But it’s important you choose one that’s immersive and adaptable to your lifestyle. Try Coding Dojo for learning Java. Its bootcamp covers all topics you need to know to become a Java programming master — from MVC Framework to test-driven development.

JavaScript

JavaScript is one of the most widely-used programming languages in the world. It's also a crucial aspect of front end development and without it, your website wouldn’t be very interactive. JavaScript allows you to move elements around on your website, making it more functional and more intuitive.

While it is possible to only use HTML to build a website, the final product wouldn’t look as appealing as others built with JavaScript. It's also a lucrative career — a JavaScript developer can make between $78,000 to $109,000 per year, according to Indeed reports.

Now, where can you learn this skill? Try Springboard. This school offers you a six to nine months program where you can learn everything about JavaScript from the comfort of your own home.

Django

Django is an open-source programming framework that offers a pragmatic and simple development process. Django is built by Python and works with a model-view-controller (MVC). People typically use Django to build a database-driven website or platform like Pinterest and Instagram.

This is also a job that pays relatively well. According to a report conducted by Neuvoo, the average salary of a Django developer ranges between $63,000 to $107,000 annually.

Explore Springboard to learn this tech skill. With its Coding for Entrepreneurs bootcamp, you’ll not only learn about Django but also related skills such as Python programming language.
