An increasing trend among the U.S. workforce is the frequency of lateral career moves. However, many companies pride themselves on employee retention.

To explore this, the Steppingblocks research team conducted a study of millions of real people employed across more than 100,000 of the largest companies in the United States. We analyzed several factors including the average number of successive positions held by individuals within each company, average duration of employment and average time to promotion. Consider these factors when mapping out a career path and choosing a college major.

Based on this study, here are five of the best companies to work for in the U.S. in terms of long-term growth potential and ultimately an optimal career path.
